HP ships 10% Linux, Red Hat earnings up, worlds biggest catch, Slashdot work of the devil and Live8 begins

posted Fri 01 Jul 05
Month#7 of 2005 begins and we start with a wonderful statement from HP regarding their sales figures. It appears they have sold over 1million Linux servers, claiming to be the biggest Linux shipper in the world. Although impressive, its fair to note that this only represents 10% of their server turnover, which for some reason I would have thought Linux being bigger than that.

Red Hat, the poster child for making money from open source, has released its first quarter results and all is looking well so far, with a 46% rise from last years results. These sort of reports puts faith into the open source movement that high earnings can be made if one picks the right business model.

When I got an email from the boss this morning with a Sports-Illustrated link, I wondered "whey hey whats going on here". But a quick dive in so to speak soon squished any hope of the swim wear edition, as I was met with the worlds largest catch! Thai fisherman have reportedly caught a monster of a fish, coming in at 646lbs. This is suppose to be the biggest fresh water fish ever caught. The Thai boys now looking for their next challenge, are heading up to Scotland to have a go a nabbing our Nessie!

A really funny story has popped from our favorite American state Utah. A Utah resident, (and it pains me to say,) an open source developer has filed lawsuits against Groklaw, Slashdot and 200 odd other sites claiming they are right wing extremists only working to denounce the work of the lord and promote terrorism. He claims Slashdot "is used by Open Source Community members to anonymously post hate speech, death threats, threats to murder". Wow, I wasn't aware just how effective my posts were on Slashdot.

Finally tomorrow see's the worlds largest concert network burst into life as our Bob takes to the stage once more to raise the profile of the 3rd world debt with Live8. For those not in the know, this is a series of worldwide concerts where extremely wealthy people stand up, sing, and then tell us poor paupers to lobby our governments to reduce 3rd world debt, to which they have already provisionally agreed to do anyway before the G8 summit. Sometimes a movement can work too well. "but ... but we didn't get a chance to sing and protest!" ;)

The open source bellwether stock reported a net income of $12.4m on revenues of $60.8m, 46 per cent up on the prior year. This equates to 7 cents a share, at the high end of analyst estimates.

Groklaw and Slashdot "right wing websites" and socialists, natch

Click here to read the full piece
The docket alleges groklaw.com and groklaw.net are "extreme right wing" and promote "messages of hatred and violence directed against members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ("Mormons"), and against business entities who employee (sic) are funded by, owned by, or operated by Mormons".

Countdown to Live 8 continues
