Lessig on content culture, Bill brings Joy to SpikeSource, Linux powers 90,000CPUs, and bad boy movies in India

posted Mon 18 Jul 05
We've made news again by snagging another technology dignitary and planting them squarely on our board of directors with all the other big brained people. Bill Joy, possibly one of the biggest brains in the software industry officially joined SpikeSource and we welcome on board the good ship Spike.

An interesting story reported by NewsForge how Linux now dominants the Top500 list of super computers, with 4 out of every 5 relying on Linux clusters. To give you a hint of the size of these clusters; there is a 90,000 PowerPC CPU which can reach around trillion floating operations per second. One will naturally refrain from any funny references regarding applying that power to a well known windowing operating system!

Lawrence Lessig pops up on the BBC today talking about how 'amateur content' is set to take a greater hold on our culture. With the rise of blogs, podcasts and various other broadcasting tools available to the average Joe, we are finding ever increasing ways to bore ourselves. Lessig (who incidentally was idolized in a recent WestWing episode) is an inspirational speaker and should you ever get the chance to see him, then grab it. Although he does say that the professional producer isn't going away, and there will always be a place for that type of production. Thank goodness, I couldn't face a world of 'Big Brother' type productions. I don't want reality; I get enough of that during the day.

There is a wonderful story reported by the Mail&Guardian regarding an incident that happened at a recent India cinema. Apparently they were watching some 'bad-boy' movies, and in an act of punishment, the police marched them all outside and perform 10 sit-ups in public, in front of their parents! Man that is cruel. On that note I'd better get off and do my daily sit-ups; I like to keep in credit! ;)

'Amateur culture' set to explode

Professor Lawrence Lessig, a champion of so-called "free culture", told the BBC digital technology was inspiring new forms of creativity. Indian police shame porn-watchers in public

Police in India's eastern state of Orissa rounded up about 200 people watching a porn movie in a cinema hall and made them do 10 sit-ups in public as punishment, a report said on Monday. They were also made to take a public vow never to watch a sleazy movie again, the 'Hindustan Times' daily said.
