Rating Open Source, Migual De Icaza Interviewed, Scotland trains its adults and DOOM on your calculator

posted Mon 01 Aug 05
TheServerSide has reported on one of the initiatives we here at SpikeSource are co-sponsoring regarding the Business Readiness of open source projects. This is something that has had a lot of discussion, debate and work here within SpikeSource and we are very excited now that it is out there to see what others think of it. If you haven't yet seen it then please check it out here http://www.openbrr.org/

We love a good interview, particularly when it involves a very clever chap with a big brain. TheFreeSoftwareMagazine has such an interview with Migual De Icaza, of MONO and GNOME fame. He talks about desktop technology and where it is heading and how far we've come already.

Back at home, my government has decided that it would be a wonderful idea to give every Scottish adult an IT training grant of £100 so they may increase their computer skills. What are the chances that the majority of these courses are going to be focused on Microsoft Office and Windows? Not sure I agree that my hard earned tax pennies should be going to train people for a software package that should be intuitive in the first place! What next? Government training aids to help us get more from Interactive satellite television?

Finally, were you one of those kids at school that had the big fancy calculator in your maths class? You know the sort, the ones that could plot graphs way beyond your comprehension but looked really cool in the play ground? Well some clever chap has managed to port the 3D game DOOM onto a Texas Instruments calculator. Now you can look geeky, clever and not have to explain complicated formulae all at the same time!

Doom ported to TI-84 / TI-84 calculators

Cellphones aren’t allowed, or you got yours taken away, and don’t even talk about Game Boys or PSPs on campus. Man, high school is such a bummer. Until they ported Doom to TI-83 and TI-84 calculators, that is. Just don’t try and break one of these out when you’re in world history or whatever, probably not a the best idea, kid.
