In an interesting piece from vnunet, you can expect around 60% savings in using an open source database instead of a commercial one. The report cites that for enterprises with data requirements of 200GB and less, the open source world has a lot to offer, considering that the majority of applications don't even use the full feature set of the database.
The report claims that the open source offerings lack uptime and performance. Eh? Let me just look at my mysql box here and note how the uptime is now measured in years!
