Wahey, the 4th of July is upon us. Wait a minute ... why am I celebrating? I represent the oppressor! Contrary to popular belief the UK doesn't celebrate this momentous day in the American calendar. So not much news coming from the US today, but the rest of the world is business as usual.TechTarget has a good editorial on the woes of choice within the Linux world. Having chosen Linux as your new operating system the choices only just begun as you delve into the world of distributions. This editorial has some good pointers on what you should be looking for.
Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols over at eWeek wrote an interesting editorial last week on the need to support open source software. He tells a tale of an unnamed open source celebrity who is facing a major problem surviving financially. I suspect I know who it is he referring to, and if you were to look over at the Linus camp and his recent troubles you may fathom out who it is. The editorial has a good point, open source software isn't free as in 0 dollars, and for the industry to survive we must stop viewing it as such.
Anyone ever read the book called 'Startup' by Jerry Kaplan? It's a very good read for the large part, including the foray into X-FILES land, as it charts the fall-and-fall of GO, the company behind the pen based computing. In light of Microsoft's payment to IBM last week, Mr Kaplan is having a bash at reviving the legal case that Microsoft killed his company off. In response Microsoft's lawyer said "These claims are 20 years old and they were baseless then". Should be interesting to watch this one play out, if anything, could be the basis for another follow-up book for Kaplan; "GO to Court" maybe?
