Come the 21st December the UK takes a major step forward by offering civil-partnership weddings, in order words, opening up the flood gates for gay weddings. Registrar's are booked up for the two weeks after the 21st with a registrar in the south of England with over 500 weddings, while in the north of Scotland, they have only 5 bookings. Countdown to Christmas Facts #22, #21, #20:
Getting closer to Christmas, and today we have 3 facts on candles. Lighting candles started way back when people worshiped the sun, they were a symbolic gesture to try and ignore the weak sun. The church not too keen on this particular practice, changed the meaning to symbolise divine light that to illuminate the world. Finally, back in the dark irish history, there was a time the catholic religion was banned. So families would light a candle in the window to alert the priest that it was safe to come around and celebrate mass. This then lead to the candle being the international welcoming symbol for all faiths.
