SpikeNews: Top50 of 10years of search, FireFox security hole found and C++ Servlets

posted Wed 21 Sep 05

Man-o-man was 1995 a busy year!  We've already reported on the number of languages (Java, CFML, PHP) and services (eBAY, Yahoo) that all celebrate their 10th anniversary this year.  We've another one to add to the mix, Lycos (yeah remember them?), which in honor of their achievement have released a Top50 most searched for items over the entire 10 year period.  Pam Anderson makes it to the top, with Britney Spears coming in 4th.  If you look at the list as a whole you can see a pattern, people want to know the meaning of life.  With searches for the bible and nostradamus giving no answers, they resort to marijunana and tattoos!  Read more:

The industries favourite web browser, FireFox, has had a major security hole discovered.  Ironically this one doesn't related to FireFox on MS Windows, but on Linux and UNIX based systems, where by a would be hacker can actually invoke shell commands assuming they can trick users to click on a link.  The recommend course of action is to upgrade immediately to at least version 1.0.7 to avoid this attack.  Read more:

Speaking of FireFox, their SpreadFireFox website reported yesterday that they have reached the magical 90,000,000 downloaded goal, with the 100million figure now firmly in their sites for hopefully around November time.

For fans of the Java Servlet API, you maybe intrigued to learn of the CPPServ project hosted over at SourceForge.  This is basically giving C++ developers the facilities of the Servlet API within an Apache 2 environment.  The popularity of Java on the server side definitely owes more than a debt of gratitude to the humble Servlet API, and it will be interesting to see if that popularity can be reinvented but in another language.  Read more:
