[SpikeTues] Google won't do Linux tools, Elevator to Space, MySQL 5 is official

posted Tue 25 Oct 05
The Blog of Helios writes an interesting piece on how Google is ignoring the Linux desktop.  He has been left wanting as he watches his wife use all the cool Google software on her WindowsXP machine and after repeatably emailing Google about this, they have said they have no plans to implement the desktop tools for Linux.  He should maybe take this opportunity and start the de-Google phase; rid himself of Google and explore the Internet withouth them.

When you listen to the old song, Fly Me To The Moon, it seems to be a lot of effort.  Why can't we just take an elevator instead?  Step in, and push the button marked 'Space'.  That is what NASA are exploring at the moment by running a $100,000 competition for anyone that can solve the first hurdle: moving up a 200ft cable using only light as its power source.  This Friday contestants will give it a shot and see how far they get.

MySQL have finally released their long awaited 5.0 database.  This is the one everyone was waiting for; stored procedures and triggers being just two of the new features available to the loyal MySQL fanbase.  MySQL were present in a number of sessions last week at EuroOSCON and their energy and excitement around this release couldn't be hidden.  They explained in their keynote that for every 1,000 users, there would be 1 customer and 10 people actively contributing to its development.  But if you really like living on the edge then ditch 5.0 and start using 5.1; SQL life to the full!
