OpenSolaris Release, IBM side steps JCP, Microsoft hires Linux creator and naked interviewing

Today we see the official release of OpenSolaris into the community. Sun has been talking this up for the last few months now and finally the day of reckoning (or download) is officially upon us.

TheServerSide is reporting an interesting development in the Java space with IBM/BEA taking the initiative to step outside of the JCP standard and publish its own specification for Service Data Objects, dispite a competing standard already within the JCP. People have been critical of the JCP in the past but this is a clear snub from both IBM and BEA. With Apache Harmony in the works, one wonders if this is the start of the breakaway from Sun's stewardship of Java.

Its all change! The chap behind the Linux Distribution Gentoo has been hired by Microsoft! He is going over to Redmond to help educate them on the ways of the open source and how they can play in the pond. Can you imagine Microsoft getting into the open source game?! I can't.

Finally a local story for a change, a man in Scotland livened up a job interview by whipping his kit off and then encouraged his female interviewer to do the same citing that this was to see how they handled extreme situations. As you can probably imagine, not a happy ending, she didn't get the job! But he got 3 years probation for his new found Human Resource initative. Plans for the Ally McBeal unisex toilet has now been abandoned though!

Daniel Robbins, the founder of Linux distributor Gentoo, is packing his bags and heading to Redmond, where he'll work for Microsoft. Robbins, who was also Gentoo's chief architect, will help "Microsoft to understand Open Source and community-based projects," according to a statement of the Gentoo site.
