The Full-Disclosure mailing list that discusses all things security related, had a seasonal post aimed at Oracle. One enterprising chap has discovered a way to worm his way into an Oracle database and has opened up the gate for all manners of naughtyness. Security expert Alexander Kornbrust was reported to have said: "At the moment, it just creates a table in the [remote] database if the attack is successful. But, it can be programmed to do much more than that. It's quite easy to replace this payload with a more dangerous payload". The main issue is down to the fact most companies still use the default passwords and thus providing a relatively easy route in.
Our own Matt Harrison has been busy in his spare time with his baby SAM. The Spike Asset Manager is a very cool utility that lets you see what you are running on your systems and offers you information in terms of what needs upgrading and what doesn't. This is an open source project you can play with, and Matt has recently installed a small webserver with it, to allow him to offer an AJAX interface to it all and for him to start building out the next generation of SAM.
What must seem a very incestious entry today, Glen Martin has also been blogging, putting his thoughts down on paper on the news item we discussed yesterday regarding VC Danny Rimer who claimed that open source companies can't (or shouldn't) innovate. Glen puts forward a number of interesting points and shows the world isn't just black and white, but a multitude of greys.
And finally, in our new series of looking at Christmas traditions, we present:
