[SpikeMon] Happy 34th Birthday Email, XML Patent was approved, Heated Mouse

posted Mon 24 Oct 05

Happy birthday Email!  While this has been the year most of the big players have been celebrating their 10th anniversary in peddling their wares to us, the original (and still) killer-app celebrates 34 years in providing us no ends of enjoyment.  It was October 1971 when Ray Tomlinson first put the "@" character to address a person on a different server.  The instant that was done, in popped an email from a former diplomat in Africa wanting someone on the west to help him transfer funds!  Oh well, Email, we salute you.

The patent system gets a fair amount of stick and here we have another example of where the system falls down.  Did you know for example that a small US company, Scientigo, in 1997 managed to secure a patent for the transfer of "data in neutral form", aka XML!  I mean honestly? What the hell is going on here.  XML is way older than 1997, but yet they still secured the rights to it.  I don't blame Scientigo for this, I blame the patent office and their complete lack of understanding.  I would love to see an article on how the patent office actually works because they have some serious explaining to do.

Engadget reports on ever more innovation coming from the palm of your hand.  On these cold frosty mornings we have enjoy heated seats (even heated steering wheels) as we drive to work.  But what happens when you get to your desk?  Well LK Design have come up with a mouse that will heat up to 102 degrees using nothing more than the power from the USB interface.  A great device for those with poor circulation.  Now if they could just apply the same principal to the keyboard, we could turn off the office heating and save the world a fortune!
