Collecting the weird and wonderful
techy stories from in and around the interweb.
C-NET has a good roundup of the story that has been doing the rounds in the blogging/forum world regarding a move by Neuros Audio, to open source their API for their media player in a hope they will chip away at the Apple iPOD dominance. All sounds wonderfully fluffy and new-age to embrace the community, but these chaps seem to be inviting a bit of flack. A very cutting response was in Slashdot: "iPod makes millions of dollars and we'd like to make millions of dollars too. Can you help us? We promise not to pay you." Embracing the community can be like licking honey off a razor; done only after serious consideration and very carefully.
Akihabara news is reporting a whopping 8GB USB stick. I mean honestly, why on earth does anyone need to carry that much storage around with them in their handbag? Isn't 640KB not sufficient for most! ;-)
The worlds 4th space tourist, Daisuke Enomoto, from Japan, is scheduled to go up above the clouds next year. Making his money from the Internet, he has declared he will go up in a specially designed suit based from his favourite cartoon character, Char Aznable. Why not? Add a splash of colour to space; it's just black and white up there, except for that large ball of fire in the middle!
Countdown to Christmas Fact#51:
The Celts believed that the sun stood still for 12 days during the winter solstice. In order for the power of light to conquer the darkness, the Druids would bless a log, the yule log, and keep it burning for 12 days. If the log went out, great misfortune might be brought about. Keeping a small piece to light the yule log next winter would ensure that good luck was carried on from year to year.
