You will have probably heard about the whole debacle that Sony has got itself into by protecting its precious audio CD from being copied illegally. The now infamous 'rootkit' they install has made the electronics giant completely rethink its whole strategy. But as this PR nightmare plays out, the EFF has taken Sony's EULA apart citing some very bizarre conditions you are effectively forced to accept. For example, if you get robbed, then you have to delete the digital music because you are no longer holding the CD. Also, if you leave the country, then you have to delete, because you aren't granted any export license. Just think of the thrill - listening to Celine Dion illegally as you fly to New York! How much of a rebel are you now?
Tunis, Tunisia plays host to the World Summit On the Information Society. This where high-level government officials come and discuss the future of the Internet and where it is heading and who should be controlling it. The hot topic is the involvement of the US Government, after their declaration that they don't intend giving up any control to any 3rd party body including the United Nations. One of our SpikeSource crew, Anand Pillai is presenting a paper at the summit titled, 'Open Source - Basis for synergies in the ICT education and research'. We wish him luck with that this week.
Many of you noted how handy the heated mouse was, but before you go handing over any hard earned currency, check out the next evolution; USB heated gloves. Now this is just sheer genius; marrying up a pair of standard all-round gloves, by shorting out the 5v line on the USB interface to create some heat. The price is very attractive too; only £15 or there abouts. Just be careful though; you are effectively tied to the desk, so should you need to move at speed, you could find your whole desktop becoming portable very quickly!
