Yesterday was the big news conference where by Scott McNealy of Sun fame, stood beside Eric Schmidt of Google, and basically announced absolutely nothing, yet that nothingness was enough to send Sun's stock price up, and drive Google's stock down by roughly $7. The marketing genius of McNealy is still not dead. Any plans as what they are going to be doing is purely speculative as neither party confirmed anything.
Now lets talk about a real show man, some body that really does know how to keep a press conference lively and full of suprises. Steve Jobs is at it again. Rumors have been rife about an iPOD video device for a long time, but it looks like something is in the wind and we are going to know what that is next Wednesday 12th October. Apple Insider reports that special invitations have been sent out with no details except for a single message, "One more thing...".
The Martha Stewart of the web, Jakob Nielsen has released his annual Top Ten Web Design mistakes of the year. It's fair to comment at this point that I have never usually agreed with his views in past years. I always felt they were too extreme and didn't reflect the real nature of the Internet. They where more of the the purist/academic views. But this year, it would appear he has indeed woken up and come up to speed with the rest of the world. The Top Ten he presents here, are on the whole, practical and filled with honest-to-goodness advice. See what you think:
Charles Ditzel, a long term follower of NetBeans, has some interesting links on the new features of NetBeans 5 and what it can do for the Java developer. While I admit to being a proud Eclipse user, the allure of NetBeans is strong and Charles' blog always does a good job of being pragmatic about the whole thing without coming over as a NetBean-hell-and-brime-stone writer.
