[Tuesday] Wikipedia tightens control, USB key with LCD, Christmas Fact #19

Wikipedia, that great authoritive resource on the Internet, has recently come under fire, for publishing material, that apparently isn't quite true. Oh my god tell me it isn't so! Just as Google is finding out with GoogleBase, when you let people post whatever they want, then they generally will. GoogleBase now being one of the best resources to find porn and drug subscriptions. Mr Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, has decided to ask people to first register before they can submit new articles. This process, (which doesn't require a valid email) is hoped to stem the volume of new articles created each day to allow the 600 odd volunteers a chance to review them. However, this doesn't stop people from hijacking content already there. So one is left asking what is the point? Problem not solved.
Linux.com has a good piece on the SSH and the things you can do with it. I am enjoying this series of articles on the traditional tools, as most of time I already know about 80% of what they are telling, but its the 20% of new stuff you pick up that make it worthwhile. For example, he explains SSH port forwarding very well here complete with a logical example.
Akihabara news have stumbled upon a USB key that comes with an LCD screen letting you see how much data you have left over. One of the other nice touches is the current date and time. But I think this is a taste of what could happen for security. Dongles that generate numbers every 5 seconds have been popular for years with many sectors, but the marrying up of the dongle and the storage could indeed prove a mainstream winner.
