[SpikeTues] Future of MySQL with Oracle, Wireless power, SMS Kettle

posted Tue 11 Oct 05

Everyone seems to be talking about last weeks Oracle announcement that they are buying the company behind the Innodb database engine. Whats the big deal there you may think?  The big deal is that this is one of the database types that MySQL ships with their product, and now instead of having to deal with Innobase for their license, they will now have to talk to big Larry and hammer out a deal.  Oracle doesn't want MySQL to be successful, despite all their "we love open source" arm waving.  Dave Rosenburg has a good editorial write up on the implications of this deal, citing that its not all doom and gloom for MySQL as many are predicting.

No matter how many wires we can remove from our lives, the last remaining one is always the power cable.  At some point we need to charge the beast up and that means plugging into the national grid.  SplashPower however have commercialised a relatively old technique and now the ability to charge up without plugging in is a step closer.  Using inductive coupling, devices can be charged up with an air gap (very small air gap).  This technique is already in use by most electric toothbrushes it has to be said.

While the tradition in America is all for coffee (and lukewarm coffee at that), the notion of boiling water for them is a strange concept.  Kettles are rarely found in most American homes, but for the rest of the world, most problems are solved over a hot tea.  Now, thanks to PG Tips (big tea maker) they have developed a kettle that can be started via an SMS message.  This definitely falls into the novelity category as the amount of time saved by radioing ahead for the kettle is minimal.  But its cool, sorry, hot, nonetheless.
